Pepper
After going on dialysis, Dad got Pepper to keep him company. She was a Collie-Lab mix and was a couple of years old. Pepper was very well trained, and had a wonderful personality. She never barked at people, and was always happy to be around people (well, as long as they were adults!).
Pepper had evidently been badly mistreated during her short life, and she was always a timid dog. She was deathly afraid of thunder. When there was thunder, she'd try to climb into the mom's lap. If mom wasn't available, she'd settle for any other woman. If there were no women around, she'd settle for a man. The first time Kathy O. visited my folks, she and I were sitting in the living room when Pepper came and tried to climb up on her lap. We hadn't even noticed that there had been a little bit of thunder.
Pepper was wonderful company for Dad. She followed him everywhere. She was a rather nervous dog, and always wanted to be where the people were - especially Dad. I'm very happy that Pepper didn't die before Dad did. Dad would really have been heartbroken if that had happened.
Pepper lived for a couple of years after Dad died, but was failing pretty badly. Mom
did her best to keep Pepper alive and well as long as possible. But the time came
when Pepper finally had to be put to sleep. We had her cremated, and scattered her
ashes along with Dad's in the Lochsa River as Dad had requested.
