Collage of the Grandkids

"Collage"

The Making of "Grandkids"

I decided to make a collage from some photos I took a couple of summers ago. The collage includes my five grandchildren, my great-nephew and my great-niece. (Since that time, one more granddaughter and one more great-niece have come my way.)

I began by using the airbrush with a crumpled paper texture to create a background. Then I made various-shaped selections from the photos and pasted each as a new layer. All of the selections have a feather of 5.

Once all of the selections were pasted in, I rearranged the layers to the desired layout and chose blend modes. The dissolve mode works especially well with feathered selections, thinks I. This shows the settings I used:

For the finishing touch, I added a BladePro border.

Now that the image is all complete, I realize that I didn't arrange the layers very well. I should have put the Missy/Aaron photo on the right side and the "Kevin" photo on the left. This way, Missy and Kevin would be looking in toward the center of the collage instead of looking outside. Real basic principle, but one I often overlook.
