"The Bridge"
Use of Frames
On This Site

Frames

This site can be displayed with or without frames. Most pages have four frames:

  1. The right frame has the main content. Most of the newer pages use a fluid design so that they don't require a minimum width to display well, though this means that the content spreads much wider than I like on larger monitors. Many of the older pages use a fixed-width 600-pixel size which gives a nicer look on larger monitors but forces horizontal scrolling on lower-resolution monitors.

  2. The left frame is for navigation. If you're using a lower-resolution monitor and want to be able to display the content frame in the entire window, you can eliminate the left frame with the "kill this frame" option. "Kill all frames" also gets rid of the hidden frames.

  3. A hidden frame used for playing music.

  4. A hidden frame used for preloading pages.

Note: Because of the hidden frames, it may sometimes appear that your browser's "Back" button isn't functioning. What's happening is that the "Back" button is being applied to one of the hidden frames. It may be necessary to use the "Back" button twice.

The site can be viewed without frames. You lose the functionality provided by the invisible frames, but you gain the ability to bookmark individual pages.

Preloading

To reduce your wait time as you wander through my site, I preload many of the pages in an invisible frame. Most of the time, if you see a "Next" option in the navigation bar at the top of the page, the next page is being preloaded.

Preloading is only helpful when you proceed through a section of the site following the "Next" links.

If you proceed to the next page before the preloading is complete, some images may display only partially or not at all. If this happens, just reload the page. To avoid this, wait until all browser activity is finished before proceeding to the next page.

If you're viewing the site without frames, preloading is not done.

Music

If you click on one of the music selections, the music plays from an invisible frame. You won't see a console.

If you want to see a console, you can right-click on the selection and choose "open in new window." If you have only one mouse button, the menu should come up if you press the button over the selection and hold it for a couple of seconds.

If you're viewing the site without frames, music links always open a new window.

Bookmarking Pages

The main disadvantage to frames is that you cannot bookmark (or save to favorites) individual pages. If you want to bookmark a specific page, there are two ways you can do this.

  1. At the bottom of most pages, the URL of the page being displayed is shown. If you click on this URL, the page opens in a new window, and you can bookmark it from there.
  2. You can exit from the frames entirely.
Exiting Frames

If you're viewing the site inside frames and would prefer to view without frames, click here: frames.htm. This page will be redisplayed outside the frames.

Entering Frames

If you're viewing the site without frames and would like to see the frames version, click here: ../index.htm. You'll be taken back to my home page.

When you view a page outside of frames, many of the pages have a link at the very bottom of the page for entering the frames version.
